    Document Imaging 40 Years Later

I just celebrated my 40th anniversary in the document imaging business.  Now, I’m not looking for presents or cake (although each would be accepted with grace and aplomb) but rather I’m reflecting on the changes since those early days in this profession.

    Back in 1975

Back in 1975 I hired on as a delivery driver but soon was moved indoors as a Copyflo operator.  The Copyflo machine was a huge contraption that produced a continuous roll of paper prints from roll microfilm.  Once the roll was complete a person (me!) would sit at a trimming board and slice each page to create single sheets of prints.  This required a dedicated room with ventilation as it got very hot.  Now days, anyone with a printer can create paper copies right from their desktop.

Another one of my early jobs was to travel around the Pacific Northwest with a portable microfilm camera, creating the film that would eventually be run on the Copyflo.  This camera broke down into two large cases and really was an engineering marvel created by the Kodak Company.  Now days if we need to capture images at a remote site we need to pack up a PC, monitor and scanner at a minimum.  I think in this case the old tech might actually be a better setup than the new tech, at least as far as portability is concerned.

    My Prediction, 20 Years Ago

I remember talking with someone at a trade function a couple of decades ago and we were discussing the possibility of paper being digitized rather than captured onto an analog media such as microfilm.  I made the bold statement that this would someday be the norm but that it wouldn’t be “in my lifetime”.  Little did I know that I would be so wrong!  The acceptance of digital document imaging took off like a rocket shortly after my ill advised prediction and the only time we see microfilm is when a client wants us to digitize it.

    From Microfilm to Digitization

Document imaging has made great strides over the 40 years and I’m curious and excited to see what the industry will come up with leading up to my 50 year anniversary.

Document Mailing Services Seattle Shhhh. I’ve got a secret for you. Besides providing the best Document Management and digitizing services in Seattle and the Pacific Northwest, Micro Com Systems supports the local title companies and county government with document mailing services as well. How’s that for serving our clientele? Since 2002, Micro Com has taken the real estate documents recorded at Snohomish County Auditor’s Office and mailed them back to the owner of record. Just last month MCS was awarded the contract for performing the same mailing services for King County. This contract will be keeping us busy for the next 5 years! When we get the documents into our shop the first thing we do is sort them by alphabet. Once that is completed we sort by address and from there the documents are boxed up or enveloped and ready for mailing. It is a very manual process so you can understand why our customers want to send it off to be handled by us. What this shows is that MCS is willing to step out of the “safe zone” and fulfill our customer’s needs, no matter what it may be. We are here to make it easy for our clientele.

Meet The Micro Com Seattle Scanning Team: Craig Weltzin

This week we are introducing Craig Weltzin!

Craig is one of our project coordinators in charge of document scanning services in Seattle. When we get your documents into our shop, Craig is the one that makes sure that they are well taken care of from start to finish. It is his attention to detail that assures our clients are getting the best quality images and metadata possible.  It is his job to develop the workflow of the project and implement that workflow into our imaging capture software.  He also designs the necessary spreadsheet or database for each of the projects. Craig wears some other hats at Micro Com Systems. He makes sure that our office is well stocked with pens, tape and staples as our resident purchasing agent. And if all that wasn’t enough, he also steps in when we need some backup for other stations like large format scanning. In Craig’s 38 years in the document imaging business there isn’t much that he hasn’t done at one time or the other. In his spare time Craig likes to tinker with his cars and watch the Hawks…of course!  If the Seahawks aren’t playing he will pretty much watch any sporting event.  If there aren’t any games Craig will look for something to watch on the classic television station.  When he isn’t glued to the TV he loves spending time with his wife Jeannie and daughter April.

In order to familiarize you with Micro Com Systems Ltd. and our Seattle employees, we would like to first introduce you to our staff.  Each week we will highlight one of our important staff members and we will begin with the general manager, Joe Bryant. Joe started in the imaging microfilm business back in 1974 with Cascade Microfilm in downtown Seattle.  Working his way through the ranks at Cascade he finally ended up in sales during the early 1980’s.  After Cascade he continued in the industry with Ford Graphics, Microfilm Service, American Microfilm and Alpha Information.  It was during the fall of 2000 that Joe called his friend Craig Hollingum at Micro Com Systems in Vancouver, B.C. and suggested that he purchase the assets of Alpha and open a Seattle office.  The rest, as they say, is history. Joe has worn many hats over the years.  Delivery person, Copyflo operator, service technician, sales and now running the day to day operations of Micro Com Systems, are just some of the jobs he has had.  His favorite part as G.M. is working with clients to develop a solution to information management problems.  Joe explained, “There is nothing as gratifying as converting a room of business documents and putting that information right at the client’s fingertips.” Joe and his wife Debbie have been married for 39 years and have two daughters.  Joe’s idea of a good time is cooking dinner for a large group and serving his homemade wine with the meal.  Joe and Debbie have been season ticket holders for the Seattle Sounders since their 2009 inception and have made many friendships with their fellow Section 116 seatmates over those years.  To that we say EBFG! Meet The Micro Com Systems Seattle Staff Joe Bryant   Give Joe a call someday and talk shop.  He loves to hear about what types of documents you have and offer up some suggestions!

MCS has an insurance company client that had committed to an Electronic Document Management platform back in 1999. Previous to them implementing this digital records system, they had historically microfilmed all important business records, from application forms to beneficiary documents, memos, updates and remittance advice.
